Windows 7 and upgrades

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 17, 2009, 10:28 AM

Thoughts.Findings.News.Stuff

So I recently installed Windows 7 RC x64. I think I'm in love. Yes I think I am in love.

Got a new graphics card. A BFG GeForce GTS 250 1GB. Damn thing is huge. Really does take up two slots. Sheesh. I had to string 2 SATA cables through the end of the card's opening above the fan to get them to connect which meant I had to loosen the card off, string them through and fit them in place. I haven't ordered any right angle SATA cables yet to replace those but I did get one for another HD I installed which worked out perfectly even though the graphics card is right over the top of all four. So choose wisely when looking at motherboards for an upgrade and make sure the SATA ports are not anywhere near the backend of the PCIe slots. This also meant I needed to buy a new power supply unit with the forethought of getting another one of these cards for an SLI setup. I got the Rocketfish 550w which glows a nice blue to cover that part. Choosing a new motherboard/Quadcore CPU combination has been a daunting task. I been scouring Tiger Direct for one that seems reasonable. Possibly the XFX nForce 750a Motherboard/CPU bundle might be my choice but I dunno. I reinstalled and played Quake 4 (haven't played any games in a long while) the other day on high settings with x16 AA, what a blast. Ya know I was thinking how much better your actual game play is more enjoyable with a decent card. For me I just was able to do better.

Also got a Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Titantium (Fatality) PCIe that fits nicely in the 1x slot above the x16. I ditched the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum I have(gave up music creation), this card definitely sounds alot nicer. And the beta drivers for Vista x64 work with Windows 7 x64 so I get to use their software instead of the measly Windows crap.

Also got 4 gigs of ram so I'm smokin' for the most part, more would be nice but at least I'm seemingly caught up with the lower end of the rest of the world chugging along with an AMD x64 Dualcore 3800+. Hey it all works right.

Windows 7 responds nicely and I'm quite impressed for the most part.

I'm also doing fine with selling on Renderosity, at least I know I won't be poor anymore, plus my brother got a job working on the Familly Guy, yup tis true, doing story boarding (revisions) I think. So we're doing ok now. But there was a time not that many months ago when we had no idea what was gong to happen. Seriously. Was very nerve racking.

I am so happy to hear that things are going well for you. I remember that we were both going through rough times then. I had to finally give up and relocate just to find work. Still not completely back on my feet, but I'm getting there! When I do get settled in here I'm going to celebrate by emptying my Rendo wishlist of all your products. For now, I'm still drooling over them and picking up the freebies that you post to hold me over! Awesome work, as usual! Congrats on your success!

So do things like Poser 7 or PS tolerate Win-7 RC? The thought of 64-bit and 8GB of RAM is tantalizing given how cheap older-style 2GB sticks are these days.

When I swapped out my old dual A64 (with 12-stream grafx-card) for a Q6600 (with 112-stream grafx-card), I found that games like Oblivion took a bit of getting used to - the "computer" turned the character too fast and I'd always overshoot the movement like a drunken sailor :-)

In chorus with the other well-wishers, glad to hear your "talents" are helping to pay the rent and feed the face. But I assume it means you must keep adding to your collection. How about a real futuristic jewelry set? Or old-ages - what would the "punk" of King Arthur or Aristotle's day wear?

Yes Poser and PS tolerate it.

Don't know the Oblivion game so I wouldn't know. Playing older games seems to be just fine. I even reinstalled Doom 3 for the hell of it and everything was cool.

Yeah I actually had every intention of making a futuristic one, even tried starting it. Funny you should mention that.

Sounds like a good setup, should run newer games without any troubles too, quake4 is pretty ancient by todays standards.

You might enjoy F.E.A.R.2 if you´re looking any more recent shooters, nice game with a good mix of horror & post-apycalyptic/sci-fi shooting. And also if you´re interested in testing the new rig out, Crysis & Unreal 3 really make the hardware cry. Both look excellent though, and the gameplay was decent too. Even though Crysis pretty much failed with the realism of the violence, headshot at close-range only made the enemy soldiers fall & moments later they got back up and started shooting back. Kind of killed the experience. But the graphics were pretty ace.
